The indigenous community of people found in the Southern cone of South America known as the Mapuches struggle to keep their culture and community thriving as they are faced with illiteracy, poverty, and harsh environmental conditions. The Mapuche Project strives to reach the Mapuches in Southern Argentina for Christ. In cooperation with local churces, Carlos Canete is working to establish a Chirstian radio outreach ministry that can extend into the remote Mapuche settlements, many of which are only accessible by riding on donkeys. A literacy program is also being developed to enable the Mapuches to read the Bible, and a food campaign is underway to provide for the community's physical needs during the harsh winter months. Leadership Carlos and Liz Cañete have worked with Campus Crusade for Christ in Argentina for more than 20 years. For several years their primary ministry was with the Jesus Film Project. They have done evangelistic work in some of the most remote and needy places in the country, but over the years Carlos began to feel an increasing burden to see biblically based churches established in the areas where he was evangelizing. Carlos is currently leading the Mapuche Project in Southern Argentina and hopes to see more churches planted in the area. Needs |
